Observations on the renewal of an academic discipline: from agricultural to rural history

International academic life recently has shown encouraging signs of certain tendencies that suggest the renewal of agricultural historiography. A catalisator of these trends is a large-scale EU research project, the Programme for the Study of European Rural Societies (PROGRESSORE), which is dedicated to the study of rural societies in Europe. The aim was that by building on the most recent results of the academic field, the participants would employ a perspective of comparative historical framework and examine those issues that are still present in the rural societies of modem Europe, and thereby helping with this new approach the development of policies that aim to solve these problems. During the period of 2006 to 2008 altogether twelve workshops were organised at various locations. These meetings resulted in the successful participation of about two hundred European scientists in the project. A product of this large-scale academic undertaking on a European level was the launch of a new series of books, entitled Rural History in Europe, by the Brepols publishing house in Belgium under the supervision of Gérard Béaur as editorin-chief. So far fourteen volumes have been published, with two further titles in preparation. Apart from the imposing book series another important result of the programme is that 2010 saw the establishment of the European Rural History Organisation (EURHO), a European network of experts of various subjects within the field of agricultural history. The organisation is expected to hold its fourth international conference in 2017.
