The Achievement of Bourgeois Status among Peasants in Transylvania after the Emancipation of Feudal Servants ÁKOS EGYED The study investigates the question what phenomena can be observed in the process of the achievement of bourgeois statues among peasants in Transylvania after the cancellation of villein socage. In the appearance of the bourgeois status an improvement can be mostly noticed among free people and not among servants. These layers could steal a march on the serfs: the ability of reading and writing was wide-spread among the Saxons and the Székely free people (Székely people were Hungarian people of Eastern Transylvania) while it was a rarity among feudal tenants. This free layer was more expereienced in the field of local administration too. More than ninetenths of peasant farms in Transylvania was a substinence peasant farm and only few of them could produce for the market on a regular basis. The farms situtated near bigger cities and specialized in certain products led in thsi area.
