Miklós Merczi PRESERVATION OF THE OBJECT RELICS OF CITY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION In 2009 the Hungarian Museum for Science, Technology and Transport (HMSTT) gave, upon the request of the Office for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, expertises for 137 city vehicles in order to make carrying out the process of protection possible. During the work a number of vehicles already enjoying museal protection were taken into account. 16 of them - among them the original carriages of the Millennium Underground are registered in the stock of HMSTT - and are shown in the central building of the Museum in the City Park, in the Museum in Deák square and in the Open Air Museum of Vehicles in Szentendre. 51 vehicles are registered in the inventory of the Communal Museum of Public Transportation in Szentendre. The paper deals with the process of protection of the remaining 86 vehicles, the fate of the unfortunately destroyed carriages, and the circumstances of the coming into being of the Szentendre Museum. A basic rule: an institution containing a public collection must not suggest to sort out goods preserved in any form or state for posterity. 211
