nent students on the condition that they should make drawings of technical novelties abroad and deposit those in the Hungarian National Museum for the benefit of the public. The Defense Club, established by Kossuth in 1844 was another significant step on the way of collecting technical relics. In the beginning of the directorship of Ágoston Kubinyi (1843) the technological collection started becoming an art collection. In 1848 a report to the meeting of the Parliament describes that 400 pieces were collected in the Handi-craft Collection and that the Kess-collection was composed of 20 000 pieces. The collection of the dismissed Industrial Club was transferred to the Hungarian National Museum following the defeat of the liberation war, in 1852, together with the material obtained from the dismissed Commercial Society. The subsequent history of the Handi-craft Collection still awaits studies and researches. It was separated from the Hungarian National Museum in 1870 when the Hungarian Royal Technological Museum was formed. The overhasty transfer led to the perishing of an important portion of the collection. The author compiled the catalogue valid up till 1859 on the basis of the available newspaper material in the Széchenyi Library. 30
