protection against floods assuring the safety ofthe agriculture and the enlargement ofthe corn-producing fields were charged upon the interested proprietaries. This latter task was accomplished by association founded by the proprietaries. The first assocciation was founded in 1810, and its most known engineer-director was József Beszédes (1787-1852). The success of the water construction works designed and managed by him contributed to the rivers Danube and Tisza. József Beszédes produced important things not only oin the field of the practical engineering works, but with his engineering-litterature work as well. His plans for constructing a channel, among others his concept of constructing a channel between the Danube and the Tisza is of importance today, too. The aim of this plán was to promote the economic closing up of ofthe region with the aid ofthe development ofthe infrastructure for the country. He was elected to the member ofthe Hungárián Academy of Scinces in 1831 and thereby he was the first representant of the engineer-society in the corporation of the scientists. The realization of his far-reaching ideas could notbe realized partly because off the lack ofthe engineering foundation and conditions and partly that ofthe credit and the necessary money.
