proved structure of the 9th Annual - we do not publish a significant event, an exhibition, a subject of outstanding technical-historical value or the new results of researches, but we thought that our 10th Annual will be of interest, if it collects and presents those milestones, significant events and introduces those personalities, which were determinant in respect of the history of the Museum from 1896 till our days. In the frame of this we can report about the establishment of our collections, of the development of their organizational system, of our scientific research activities, of our results on the field of public education and of our day-to-day technical and economic activities. On the basis of this consideration the increment of the collections, the development of the number of visitors are not published in the papers, but only after Part V, which introduces the affiliations. In Part I we introduce the history of the Transport Museum and the course of life and work of those personalities, who directed and direct the work of our Museum between 1896 and 1996. In Part II we inform about the establishment and development of our collections. Part III deals with the scientific research and public education work. Part IV presents the history of the museum building and the preservation of engineering objects. Part V introduces the affiliations of the Transport Museum. Part I. History of the Traffic Museum and the Course of Life of its Leaders between 1896 and 1996. Dr.Erzsébet Molnár introduces in her paper "The First 50 Years: Kajetán Banovits, Gyula Geduly, Lajos Samarjai" the activities of the first three directors of the Transport Museum on the basis of the documents foud in the archives of the Museum. The paper demonstrates the enduring, hard work of Banovits rendered for keeping the collection of the millenium exhibition for development and expansion of the Museum. Geduly, who regarded the fate of the Museum as his personal affair, continued the work. Under his leadership it became possible to obtain several significant original airplanes for the aviation collection. Samarjay, as a retired MÁV president, took over the management of the Museum in 1934. He attached a great importance to make popular the Museum, he prepared informations, catalogues and placed guiding boards. Under his leadership as direktor the visits in groups became regular and the collections were increasing. His last activity was the saving of objects from the devastation of war, in which he had - through no fault of his own - unfortunately a little success only. Dr.Vince Mészáros Î and dr.Balázs Mészáros inform in their paper "The History of the Transport Museum between 1942 and 1967" about the fact that World War II didn't spare even the Museum. After the war a very little staff under the leadership of József Minary, MÁV chief engineering counsellor started the removal of the ruins and the rehabilitating works. Minary was replaced by év.Zoltán Szilassy, retired head of department of the Ministry. In 1951 the Museum was attached to the Scientific Research Institute of the Railway and for the further management of activities and businesses dr.Vincze Mészáros, MÁV chief councellor had been appointed. The further part of the paper demonstrates the tough work rendered by the director and the members of the institution in interest to restore the museum building, while looking after preservation and development of collections and arranging seasonal exhibitions in the same time. As a result of the steady work it was possible to open the doors of the rebuilt museum on the 2nd April 1966. By this time the task was not only the rebuilding of the museum and the arrangement of the opening exhibition, but the grounds of the scientific, historical exploration of transport had 375
