Fig. 6. Drinking vessel, Imari, beginning of XVIII th century The drawing of the flowers recalls the style of those on figures 15, 16, 17. in Volker's book 8 , the composition of the ornamenting is similar to the vase on page 213. of "Old Imari". Volker dates his pieces between 1720 and 1730. Our following piece is a cup 9 (Fig. 5.) where the fine drawing and the interesting asymmetry of the composition is most striking. The body of the cup widens above the low base, the rim bends inwards. Beside the under-glaze blue it is decorated by red, gold, yellow, leaf-green and turquoise-green colours. There is a blue ring on the bottom. Blue stripes appear on the base and a red flowery ornament with tendrils above it. The body of the cup is decorated by two half kiku-mons and two peonia branches. One of the kiku-mons is placed below the rim, the other is on the other side, below. Every second petal of the kiku-mon is painted under-glaze blue, its surface is covered by golden latticeornaments. The other kiku-mons show leaf- and clasper-motifs on pink petals. There are flowers in full blossom and buds with fine red contours on the peonia branches, the leaves are under-glaze blue and above-glaze green. The underglaze blue has a violet shade and is spotted, the glaze is worn off and muslin8 Volker : The Japanese Porcelain . . . 9 Inv. Nr. 5542. Height: 8,2 cm, diameter at the mouth: 10,2 cm.
