HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Cseh, Éva: Some Early Imari Porcelains

Fig. 7. "Kendi", Imari, XVIII th century like. Inside, on the bottom of the cup a red-contoured kiku-mon can be seen with sixteen petals painted by gold. The piece is worth noting because of its livery colours, fine elegant drawing and nice form. Concerning the dating the figure 8. in Volker's book can give support showing much similarity as to form, decoration and style. Thus our piece could have been made at about 1720. Originally our cup also could have had a lid and saucer. Our following piece (Fig. 6.) is an angular drinking vessel 10-(probably sake holder), it is a typical Japanese work giving an unusual impression with its asymmetrical decoration. The bottom of the vessel is a little bit hollow, it has no glaze. On the top of it there is an angular pouring-pipe in one corner, beside it we find a glued pine branch for handle. It is partly coloured, partly without glaze. There is a small hole in the other corner. There are alternating decorations on the sides of the body. One side: a running hare on the bank of a brook, a sitting hare below. There are cut médaillons above, at the edge of the vessel and below, on the left. In one of them there is a flower with tendrils, in the other stylized waves. Other side: in the middle there is a squirrel between oak-leaves, i°Inv. Nr. 50.699. Height: 19,5 cm.
