HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Report on the Activities of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts in 1964

These 171 pieces correspond to the 143 items of the inventory-book. Among the purchases, the outstanding pieces are: China: Celadon dish, Sung period (fig. 2). Porcelain vase painted with figures (fig. 1). 6—7 th century Devata-head from the Hung Hsien Kyzyl caves in Hsinkiang, from von Le Coq's expedition, Chien Kung, Landscape with Figures, Fr. Castiglione (Lang Shi-ning), White Monkey, Chi Pai-shi, Flowering branch (fig. 4), Chi Pai-shi, Lobsters and Crabs (fig. 5). Japan : Fujita Tsuguharu, Fairy, from the early twenties (fig. 5), 31 pieces from Aurel Gászner collection: paintings, wood-block prints, pottery and bronz­es, generally of a high artistic value. We will give their detailed description in one of the later volumes of our Annual. Turkey : silver incense burner, 17 th century. Among the cessions, there is an interesting collection of the contemporary Vietnamese crafts, ceramics, lacquer-ware, wood and ivory carvings, and items of folk-art textiles, which was transferred to us by the Institute of Cultural Relations, selected from a larger collection that had been exhibited first in Budapest in 1962, and later in a number of country towns (fig. 11 ). From the list of donations, we should first mention those 25 pieces from the bequest of the Kossuth Prize winner, painter István Csók (1865—1961), which our museum received from his daughter, Julia Csók, Chinese or Viet­namese table and chairs (fig. 6—7—8), Chinese bronze and porcelain figures (fig. 9—10), than-ka from Tibet, Persian encrusted ewer and basin, large Japanese bronze vase, etc. István Csók, who, after József Rippl-Rónai (1861— —1927), was among the Hungarian painters most interested in Chinese and Japanese Art, collected these pieces at the beginning of this century in Paris, and some of them could be seen in some of his best known paintings, now in the Hungarian National Gallery. Our other donors : Mr. and Mrs. H. Carless, three blue-glazed Persian pottery, painted black, Péter Polonyi, an 18 th century copy of Chou Ying's painting, „Landscape with Figures", László Ferenczy, Li-Ko-jan, „Boy sitting on a Bull" (fig. 12). Here again we express our grateful thanks. Travels: László Ferenczy took a trip to Munich, Paris, Geneva, Zurich and Vienna to study the Eastern collection, from 16 th of March till 13 th of April. —• According to the Hungarian-Korean and Hungarian-Chinese Cultural Agree­ment, he could travel with Edit Egyed, curator of the textile-department of the Museum of Industrial Arts, to the Korean and Chinese People's Republics on 27 th of September, delegated by the Ministry of Culture. In Phenyang, they visited the National Gallery and the Museum of Revolution and on two trips to the country, they studied the royal tombs from the 6—7 th century at Kangsu near the village Samyori and the III. tomb of Anak as well, and at Hanum the rich archaeological (next to the paleolithic finds of 1962, the neolithic section is very significant) and the decorative art collections of the Bong-un Museum. On several conferences with Korean colleagues they gave an account of Hun­garian experiments in restoration of art objects and method of exhibition and, in return, they got useful information about the Korean archaeological and art
