Beluszky Pál: Az elővárosok útja Nagy-Budapesthez 121-152

Tanulmányok Budapest Múltjából XXX. hundred years of the process of the formation of suburbian settlements and suburbs, the agglomeration consists of four stages. - The first phase of the agglomeration: up to 1850 Urbanization being evidently significant remained within the boundaries of public administration in Pest - Buda - Óbuda until the middle of the 19 th century. There were altogether two small settlements, founded by the landowner, adhering to the borders of Pest and Buda, Albertfalva and Újpest, the birth of which was stimulated by the proximity of the would-be capital city. The inhabitants were mainly dabblers who had not been accepted by the guilds in Pest or Buda and Jewish tradesmen who were still limited in their settling down. The inhabitants of the neighbouring villages enjoyed the advantages offered by the nearby vivid market centre, their position in transportation was favourable too, but it did not lead to an economy maintaining the city, neither did it influence their demographical character. - In the course of the the second phase of agglomeration: (1850-1870) though limited in their territory and size the formation of suburban settlements was started, and in some cases a demographical growth, exceeding far the average of the villages manifested itself. Up to the 1870 Compromise the process was mainly limited to the northern section of the Pest side, and the full exposure of the first stage of the development could have been observed here by then. The formation of an agrarian economy providing for the city affected larger areas. - After the Compromise in 1867 and the uniting of the city in 1872 Budapest, regaining the role of capital city underwent a rapid development. The city is the main facilitator of migration within the country: between 1870 and 1900 there are more than 200,000 people moving into Budapest. The dynamic growth can hardly be stopped at the borders of the capital. The new phase of the development of the outskirts of the city starting around 1870 can be characterized by the expansion of suburbian development, new types of relationships: Settling down people and industrial activity into the area, the appearence of daily commuting. - In the fourth phase of agglomeration (1895-1950) the process of agglomerating was influenced by building out suburbian transportation, building out their „own" industry, the transformation of the settlements into villages and towns. In 1930 the agglomeration area has about 410,000 inhabitants. 152
