Abstract

On opening the find there were spinned cord-like textile pieces on a side that could have been used for hanging the textile. So it can be supposed that the piece of silk decorated with coats of arms could have been a wall tapestry, though it only remains a supposition as nothing is known of its original size. In the wet muddy infilment layer of the well there were some other textile pieces too. The oncoming pieces were also found at the same depth with the one decorated with the Hungarian-Angevin coat of arms. Their material and fabrication shows similarities. Probably they come from the same period and somehow they might belong together. As the restoration of the textile finds has not been completed yet a more realistic image of their relationship can only be gained after each piece will have been restored and scientifically and technically investigated. There are four pieces among the silk finds with oak leaves and branch ornament that are identical in shape, and there are two being a mirror reflection of them. The motif stems out from a branch standing vertically with small oak leaves growing out of it on the right and on the left. At the top third of the branch it is dynamically continued by a vertical meander with leaves and it diverges downwards into further branches with leaves ending with round pentapetalous flowers. At the bottom of the other group made up of three leaf-shaped textile pieces - reminding of spear heads - there is a short stem diverging into two with an acorn ending at the top. In the middle of the spearhead shape there is an oak leaf inlay. Both the motif and the inlay are lined by a contouring thread. Based on historical facts it has to be said that in 1270 King Charles II married Mary of the Árpád dynasty, sister of King Ladislav IV, daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary. King Charles Robert, the first Angevin ruler of Hungary was his grandson (r. 1308-1342). Problems of Heraldry and Chronology All the barry coats of arms of the Árpád dynasty in the tapestry begin with the white bar - i.e. silver in heraldry. There are several representations of coats of arms known from this period and they
