Abstract

usually begin with red. Except for the coat of arms represented on the coronation globe and the representation of King Louis the Great in the Picture Chronicle. These are the two exceptions found in Hungary but the barry coats of arms in the church of Santa Maria Donnaregina in Naples where the sepulchre of Queen Mary of Hungary can be found all begin with white - i.e. with silver in heraldry. It was the coat of arms of Mary of Hungary the wife of the king of Naples where the barry coat of arms of the Árpád dynasty and the Angevin coat of arms were united and it appears in the coats of arms of her descendants. Charles Robert, the Hungarian king used this Hungarian-Angevin coat of arms after the death of Queen Mary from 1323 on. The son of Charles Robert, King Louis I (r. 1342-1383) and later her daughter, Queen Mary, and even King Charles II, descendant of the Durazzo branch of the Angevins (r. 1385-1386) used the united coat of arms. The origin of the pattern of the Hungarian-Angevin coat of arms can be traced in the royal court of Naples. The arts rising to a peak at the court of Naples under the reign of King Robert I may have exerted significant influence on the formation of the Hungarian arts of the period of King Charles Robert. Tino di Camaino arrived at Naples in 1323 to build the sepulchre of Queen Mary who had died in the same year. The sepulchre had been accomplished by 1326 and as it has been mentioned it can be seen in the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina. The heraldic ornaments of the church are related to the queen buried at the nunnery. There is a carpet imitation with an endless pattern of coats of arms with the Angevin lilies on the background of the sepulchre of King Robert I in the Church of Santa Chiara in Naples. The decoration of the so-called Angevin Bible of Mechelen is similar too, where there is a throne carpet decorated with Angevin coats of arms with a lambel behind King Robert. The same type of the endless row of lozenge shields with coats of arms can be seen behind the royal couples in the series of portrays of the three generations of the Naples line. It is a significant parallel that on the same page of the Angevin Bible behind Queen Mary and her husband, Charles II there is a throne carpet with the barry coat of arms of the Árpád
