Abstract

There are four golden lilies in the blue field of the lozenge shield, over which there is a three pointed red lambel. The three pointed lambel over the field of lilies points toward the side lines of the French royal family in our case the Neapolitan court. The three pointed lambel above the lilies was used by the Neapolitan rulers, too in their coats of arms. So did Queen Mary of Hungary, the grandmother of Charles Robert. There is an interesting data that might be related to the making of the carpet that Charles Robert had 80 foot red, white and blue textiles bought in Naples in order to make six Hungarian royal banners from them. The method of the fabrication of the tapestry The coats of arms of the Árpád dynasty. Four white and four red (45-55mms wide) stripes were cut of silk taffeta. The side of the red one was folded in and it was laid on the white stripe and they were sewed together by so-called preliminary stitches fitting the size of the square. The Angevin coats of arms: The squares were made of blue silk taffeta, (size btw 380-270mms) The yellow lilies were cut out of silk taffeta too. (150mms x 130-150mms). In the Angevin coat of arms there were four lilies placed on the square-shaped ground textile standing on its point. There was a red silk thread lain following the contours of the lilies. It was stitched to the ground textile by a thinner thread. The lambel was fixed to the lilies by the same method. The sides of the squares, representing the Angevin coats of arms, made by patchwork technique were laid on the squares representing the barry coats of arms one by one and they were stitched together by preliminary stitches. The traces of sewing and needlework can be seen on the tapestry, thus it can be claimed that it was not made from reused material. Although it cannot be excluded that it could have been larger in size. Examining the material it could have been observed that at some sections it had been roughly cut, and these edges had been folded in. This method is also possible when the edge of the textile ravels out and it is repaired.
