Abstract
similarly deep „pit" that could have served earlier as a cistern or a well. Our questions can only be completely answered after the detailed and thorough investigation of the complete archaeological material of the whole area ; and after the comparative analysis of the wells will have been done. To be able to solve the problem it would be necessary to locate the site of the synagogue. Related to the foundation of the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary or St Sigismund András Végh has shown that in Würzburg, Bamberg and Regensburg a church was erected on the site of the demolished synagogue usually dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary. Silk tapestry decorated with the Hungarian-Angevin Coats of Arms The tapestry was found in the well on 4th October 1999. By this time we had reached the depth of 10 metres. The stinking, wet, muddy layer preserving so many valuable finds - among them the numerous textile pieces made of silk - was first observed somewhat above this level. The tapestry was inside a 400x350x300 mms mud ball covered in pulp. It was opened up and cleaned in the restorer's workshop of the Budapest Historical Museum. Its complete restoration has been done in the Museum of Applied Arts. On its finding the tapestry consisted of several torn pieces that could have been fitted together. The full length of the conserved piece is 2400 mms, its width is 1100 mms and it is made of silk taffeta. It is an appliquéd patchwork. The colour of the textile found in the well had been severely damaged, we can only draw conclusions concerning its original colours by dye tests, analogues in heraldry and in the difference of the shades that can be observed presently. There are 26 diamond-shaped shields, i.e. Lozenge shields as it is called in heraldry, in four rows containing the coat of arms of the Árpád dynasty. It is interesting that the barry shield - as it can be observed at the better preserved parts of the find - begins with the white - heraldically the silver - stripe. The coats of arms of the Angevin dynasty were preserved in 3 rows, in 21 diamond-shaped shields (heraldically in lozenge shields) .
