" " in Pirmicus Maternus (De errore prof anarum religionum, ed. Ziegler, Teubner, 1907, p. 4). Seth is the husband of Isis, in Minucius Felix (Octav. 28) Isis is worshipped together with the ass. The representations of the Graeco-Egyptian Books of Magic show Isis together with Seth-Typhon (Preisendanz : Papyri graecae magicae p). In the centre of the cult of the gnostic Sethians' sect we find Seth-Typhon (Wünsch : Sethianische Verfluchungstafeln p. 101 sqq.) Several representations with ass's head, first of all the mock-crucifix of Palatínus (Jacoby, ARW, 1927, p. 264 sqq) a lamp of Fiesole and the Roman tabelláé devotionis (Wünsch o. c. passim) belong to the sphere, where we search for the origin of the representations from the sigillatas of Aquincum. It is an important circumstance that this representation is elsewhere unknown, the aim obviously was to satisfy the local needs. We also have to mention some recent finds. Near the amphitheatre of the military town, a small enamel amulet of the goddess Thoeris was found. Besides this, two other objects of an Egyptian character have recently passed to the museum in Aquincum : one is a small bronze lion clambering up a plant, perhaps imported from Alexandria ; the other is a modern imitation of a gem. As an authentic find of Aquincum we can mention a bronze ichneumon in a private collection. This belongs to the rarer finds ; we are acquainted with similar examples from the Greek towns of the Pontus. The Municipal Museum of Budapest acquired from a private collection a bronze statue of Osiris, which probably was also found in Aquincum or in the environs, as the late possessor collected objects from this place ; the patina of the piece shows the characteristics of the Danube-country. Besides this we also know several Osiris-statues from Pannónia. In the Pleissig-Collection in Budapest, there is to be found an enamel ushabti of the Saitic type found in the mountanous district of Buda together with a Roman fibula ; its inscription is to-day unreadable. There is another ushabti in the Egyptian department of the Museum of Fine Arts of Budapest, being the deposite of the Archaeological Institute of the PázmányUniversity ; it was found in the territory of Aquincum ; its easily readable inscription contains the Saitic version of the sixth chapter of the Book of the Dead ; its possessor was called Psammetik. We have known several ushabtis from Pannónia : one is a funeral find from Pécs. We also know several unpublished Egyptian finds from the environs of Aquincum. In the Museum of Székesfehérvár, there is a small headless bronze statue representing a figure stepping forward. There is also a small late-Egyptian bronze figure of the squatting goddess Maat. A scarab from Dunapentele (the antique Intercisa) is at present in the Fleissig Collection. The former M. Schmidt-Collection which has become the property of the City of Budapest includes several Egyptian objects. They belong to a smaller group, consisting of types which show the characteristics of Roman objects from Dunapentele ; this place of discovery also seems likely because of the designation »Intercisa« written formerly on their case. The most interesting piece is a mutilated bronze statue of Bes which is rare among the monuments of the Imperial Age in the West. There are also three bronze statues of Osiris, all of the common mummy-like type, a sitting bronze Harpocrates sucking his finger and a small sitting bronze Isis with the child. We posses several statues of Harpocrates and Isis from Pannónia which generally belong to the HellenisticRoman type, but the above mentioned ones show the Egyptian style. The selection of the gods : the gods the »Osiris-trinity«, and Bes, the protective deity who in the. Date Times came into connection with the Osiris-cycle, makes it probable, that the pieces in our possession are fragments of the house-altar of an Isis-believer. 496
