3. Előzetes jelentés a helytartói palota szondázó jellegű kutatásáról (H. Kérdő Katalin)

Összefoglalás A kutatás eddig nem foglalkozott a helytartói palota kiterjedésével, a meglévő adatok alapján az eddig ismert palota jól lehatárolható tömbjén kívül, a dél felé folytatódó falak alapján legfeljebb még egy épülettel, ill. a külünböző periódusban épült paloták alaprajzi eltérésével számolt. Az új kutatások alapján hatalmas területet elfoglaló palotaegyüttes méretei azonban nem meglepőek, ha végiggondoljuk a következőket. A földrajzi adottságokat tekintve az óbudai Kis-sziget ideális lehetőséget nyújtott arra, hogy itt épüljön fel a helytartói palota. A legiótábor szomszédságában, szervesen kapcsolódva, de mégis elkülönülten áll a katonaváros keleti szélén. Ugyanakkor kelet felől a Nagy-sziget és a Duna szabályozásakor kikotort Fürdő-sziget elválasztotta a barbaricumtól, lehetőséget nyújtva a védelmi rendszer kiépítésére. A természetet közismerten kedvelő rómaiak, akik palotáik, villáik falfestményein rafinált módon csempészték be épületeik belső tereibe a természeti táj szépségeit, kihasználták a sziget adta lehetőségeket.
