Finnugor etimológiai szótárak

This paper surveys the existing etymological dictionaries of the Finno- Ugric languages. The first general etymological dictionaries were Budenz (1873-1881) and Donner (1874-1888); these were followed, after a long gap, by Collinder (1955). The dictionary that presents the Finno-Ugric elements of the Hungarian vocabulary (which I nevertheless list as a general etymological dictionary) was published between 1967 and 1981. The Uralisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, which is widely used now as a standard reference work, appeared between 1986 and 1988.

The dictionary by Czuczor and Fogarasi (1862-1874), which does not come up to the standards of scientific etymology, the excellent but stunted Gombocz and Mel ich (1914-1944) and the popularising Bérezi (1941) were followed by the first really useful Hungarian dictionary called Historical-Etymological dictionary of the Hungarian Language (1967-1976). An updated German version of this dictionary was published between 1993-1997. The latest Hungarian dictionary to date is Zaicz (2006). For Finnish the standard reference is Suomen kielen etymologinen sanakirja (1955-1981) and the more recent Sumen sanojen alkuperä (1992-2000); for Estonian, Mägiste’s dictionary and the recently published new etymological dictionary are to be mentioned.

The number and quality of the dictionaries of the smaller Finno-Ugric languages is uneven. Of the major works, Steinitz’s Ostiak dictionary, Lytkin and Gulyaev’s Zyryen dictionary and Bereczki and Agyagási’s Cheremis dictionary are serious scientific achievements.

1. A kezdetek. A finnugor történeti-összehasonlító nyelvészet hőskorának két legnagyobb alakja Sajnovics János (1733-1785) és Gyarmathi Sámuel (1751 — 1830) volt. Sajnovics csillagász, jezsuita szerzetes volt, akit a kor neves csillagásza, Hell Miksa [Max Hell] vitt magával Eszak-Norvégiába 1769-ben, amikor a Vénusz elhaladt a Nap előtt, lehetőséget teremtve ezáltal fontos asztronómiai mérésekre. Sajnovics itt a magyarok és a lappok rokonságát kutatta, majd féléves koppenhágai tartózkodása alatt megírta fő müvét (Demonstratio. Idióma Ungarorum et Lapponum idem esse [Bizonyítás. A magyar és lapp nyelv azonos]). Ebben 150 magyar-lapp szóegyezést mutat be, ezek közül 114 tőszó, a többi származék. Zaicz Gábor számításai szerint a helyes etimológiák száma 33, pl. ad, éj, él, fagy, fészek, jég, mony, nyel, száj, szarv, szem, tud, vaj, váll (Zaicz 1970: 247-248; vö. továbbá Zsirai 1952, Lakó 1973: 114-140).
