REMARKS ABOUT A PAPER ON STRESSING by László Varga The paper being discussed here is K. É. Kiss's „Még egyszer a magyar mondat intonációjáról és hangsúlyozásáról" ['Once more on the intonation and stressing of the Hungárián sentence'; in this volume]. In contrast with Miss É. Kiss's claims I think that a) the further differentiation according to strength of Hungárián primary stresses signalled by pitch prominence by applying a Hungárián version of the Nuclear Stress Rule is problematic, and that b) when conveying new information, the élément in topic position can be primary stressed and in the same intonation unit as the comment. 66
