440 SEBEOK, THOMAS A. „Dialect" from a Zoosemiotic Perspective by THOMAS A. SBBEOK In this commemorative tribute to Laziczius, who developed semiotic conséquences in his introduction to gênerai linguistics, the author calls attention to the fact that many animais including insects, frogs, birds and mammals hâve developed dialects — some inherited, others learned but environment always interacting with heredity. He reviews cases from the vast literature of animal communication (honey-bees, éléphant seals, pikas, squirrel-monkeys, etc.). Details are given about géographie variation in bird vocalizations, especially about songs of courtship. Zoosemiotic théories and data can be utilized in illuminating anthroposemiotic problems. i
