A Szlovák Köztársaság településeinek nemzetiségi, vallási adatai 1991 (1996)

ELŐSZÓ

PREFACE A few years ago the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, with the financial assistance of the National Mid-Term Social Research and the National Scientific Research Fund, a series of research, started data compilations and publications on nationality and ethnicity issues which had not been possible in the past 45 years. So were and are being prepared various printed publications on these issues, on the areas of the so-called historical Hungarian regions presently belonging to neighbouring other countries and on the present area of Hungary. As a result of research and secondary data processing, the publications published till now, have followed the 1910 administrative divisions, presenting in long time series the changes in the nationality composition of the population of localities. Tabulations generally contain the results of 18801941 Hungarian censuses and, in some cases, those of censuses carried out in the successor states, too. In the framework of this series, the following volumes have already been published: - Distribution of localities in Transylvanis by nationality (mother tongue) (1850-1941), - Distribution of localities in Upper Northern Hungary by nationality (mother tongue) (1880-1941), - Distribution of localities in Subcarpathia by nationality (mother tongue) (18801941). The preparation of the volume on the Distribution of localities in Southern Hungary by nationality (mother tongue) (1880-1941) is underway, dealing with data of localities attached to Yougoslavia (mainly to the present Small-Yougoslavia, Serbia). This volume is expected to be published in 1997. Another volume dealing with the Distribution of localities in Burgenland (Austria) by nationality (mother tongue) (1880-1991) will be published in 1997, too. The series was initially planned to contain data of population censuses until nowadays, but missing sources have not allowed for the publication of relevant data on the period after World War II. The President of the CSO took the initiative to publish the data of post-war censuses, too. For this purpose he addressed a letter to the presidents of the Rumanian and Slovakian Statistical Office asking for putting the relevant nationality (mother tongue) data by localities relating to this period, at our disposal. The President of the Slovakian Statistical Office, in his reply, informed us about the fact that earlier his Office had intended to process these data but, as a consequence of financial shortages this has not yet been possible. So till now we haven't been given the required 1940, 1961, 1970 and 1980 population census data by localities. Simultaneously, the publication containing the final results of the 1991 population, building and housing census (nationality and religion by localities) was attached to the letter (Narodnosf a nabozenske vyznanie obyvatel'stva SR /definitivne vysledky scitania I'udu, domov a bytov 1991/). 9
