A Szlovák Köztársaság településeinek nemzetiségi, vallási adatai 1991 (1996)

ELŐSZÓ

We think that the publication in Hungarian of this material could also fill a gap until the publication of the data of the aforementioned four population censuses in Hungarian language will be possible. In compiling the present volume we made use of other official publications on the 1991 Slovakian population census from other sources, too (Zakladne iidaje za republiku a okresy SR /definitivne vysledky sditania fudu, domov a bytov 1991/; Struktura obyvatel'stva podia veku a pohlavia v SR /definitivne vysledky sditania fudu, domov a bytov 1991/). These volumes served as basis for the detailed tabulations on the national and district level as well as for the population figures by localities. Our present volume does not contain any explanation of concepts nor a detailed methodological chapter; however the inclusion of some remarks seems unavoidable in order to facilitate the use of the publication. These are the following: - the territorial breakdowns used in the former volume on Upper Northern Hungary and in the present publication are different; - in the population, building and housing census carried out with the reference date of March 3, 1991, Czechoslovak citizens with permanent residence were enumerated; - both nationality and religious affiliation were to be declared according to the free statement of respondents; - unlike former Czechoslovakian population censuses, Gipsy, Moravian, Silesian, Ruthenian and Ukrainian nationalities were also identified; - data by localities in this publication do not contain those of Polish and German nationalities, numbers relating to population with no confession and of „other" denominations are not included in detail either; - in the end it is to be stressed that data on nationality and religion are presented in the Slovakian alphabetical order of districts and localities and in accordance with the administrative division of 1991. In the tables the Slovak name of the given locality is followed by the relevant Hungarian name taken from the 1913 Gazetteer of Hungary. The Hungarian name of localities unified after 1913 as well as the point of time of the unification and the formation of localities not included in the 1913 Gazetteer are presented in footnotes. An Index of locality names annexed to the volume facilitates the use of the publication. The table of contents and the preface are published in English, too. Taking all this into account, we hope that the publication of this volume will be serving the interest of science and of people striving after new knowledge.
