V. EXPLANATION OF CONCEPTS
third-level schools of finances and accountancy, the higher school of commerce and catering trade and the higher vocational school of foreign trade. Persons having obtained qualifications, college certificates at the specialized section of the Evening University of Marxism- Leninism at faculties of economic policy, mass education and of partybuilding policy are included in the line of data "non-university third-level qualifications" within the "other" group. All persons having graduated from other faculties were included in the category of generál science and mass education. The data of those with veterinary and agricultural mechanical qualifications (except the qualifications received at the Budapest Technical University) are included in the category of agriculture. The data of the singing and music teachers of vocational schools, generál schools and secondary schools — except the art teachers — are shown not among those of "art" but among those of "education". Graduates from the faculties of teachers of economy, are not included among those with economics-related but among those with education-related qualifications. s The group of trade includes only those who completed the Higher School of Commerce and Catering Trade after 1960. Those who had completed a "commercial" college or academy before that year, are included in the group of persons with economics-related qualifications. Data vrtúch indicate the rates — calculated from the population of respective age — of certain more characteristic qualification levels by adding those of a still higher educational attainment (e.g. the rate of those having completed a secondary school alsó contain the data of persons having obtained a certificate of a third-level educational institution, a school-leaving certificate) differ from the ranking according to the highest educational attainment. The line "0 grade, totál" in the columns concerning the year 1930 of the Table 1.1.14 does not include the number of those who can write and read without having completed any school. In the analysis, the term "graduates" refers to all persons with third-level education (diploma). ECONOMIC ACTIVITY In respect of economic activity, the population consists of the following categories: active earners, unemployed seeking a job, those seeking job the first time, inactive earners and dependents. Active earners are those pursuing a gainful activity, having earnings or incomes, and actually working, respectively, employed or in outworker's relation or members of co-operatives during the week preceding the census moment, i.e. - employees a/ in economic organizations with a legal entity, i.e. in enterprises, economic companies with a legal entity (limited liability companies, shareholders, etc.), as well as in co-operatives; b/ in economic organizations without a legal entity (economic co-operatives, unlimited (mercantile) partnerships, companies with civil rights etc, individual ventures); c/ in budget-, social insurance and other organizations; - members of co-operatives; - individual enterpreneurs (inclusive the own- account workers and those of liberal professions). To the active earners belong alsó - the helping family members of the non-agricultural self-employed; - the seasonal workers, as well as those of the agricultural helping family members who worked at least 90 days in 1989; 257
