BEVEZETŐ

INTRODUCTION At the 1990 population census the institutional households with lodgers registered permanently or temporarily were surveyed. Consequently, this publication summarizes primarily the data of - infants' homes and homes for children under school-age, - students' hostels, students' boarding-houses, schools with board and lodging, - workers' hostels and lodgings for the employed, - social homes, almshouses, - home-houses (pensioners', room-tenants', young married couples' houses) as well as of certain institutions with lodgers registered temporarily or permanently, for example, of - health institutions for bed-patients (health children's homes etc.), - hotels, pensions, - other temporarily operated institutional households (refugee camps). The data of institutional households which are - for whatever reason - empty, of institutional households without registered lodgers such as, for example, hospitals, hotels, holiday hotels, week-end resting places of legal entities as well as of workers' hostels used seasonally (for example, only in summer) and of institutions empty because of renovation - with some exceptions - were not surveyed this time. Since at the 1990 census the population was enumerated on the basis of their registrations, most tables in this publication give detailed information only about the surveyed data of the five types of institutions listed in the first group. The publication contains also a short review of the history of the enumerations of institutional households since, as part of the Hungarian full-scope population censuses, they have already a past of 100 years. Further, a textual analysis of the data of the institutional households at the 1990 population census is also presented. The explanations of the more important concepts and criteria used in the volume are in chapter VI of the publication. A detailed communication of the full-scope data of the institutional households surveyed in the course of the 1970 and 1980 population censuses can be found in the 116-page publication "The more important data of the institutional households surveyed at the 1980 population census" prepared by the Population Census Department of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office as a working document. 4 <
