1980 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Summary data (1984)

XI. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION/ THE FLATS", AND THE BUILDINGS OF HOUSING ESTATES

estate dwelling houses constitute 1. 5 percent of all dwelling houses at Budapest, 4. 5 percent in other towns and 0. 1 percent in the villages, but at the same time 15 percent of all dwellings and 16 percent of all occupants are in housing estate dwelling houses. There are on the average 15 flats and 47 occupants per one dwelling house (staircase). In 1980 there were more than 535 thousand housing estate flats in the country, one third at Budapest, 20-22 percent in county seats, county towns and other towns, and 3 percent in the villages. The housing estate flats constitute considerable proportion of all dwellings 25 percent at Budapest, in county seats and in county towns 38-38 percent, and 20 percent in other towns. The 17 thousand housing estate flats in the villages is less than 1 percent of all village dwellings. In the towns of the country there are on the average 80 dwelling houses and 1 27 0 flats per one housing estate. The number of dwelling houses per one housing estate is almost the same at Budapest and in other towns, but the number of flats per one housing estate - because of bigger buildings - is almost twice as many at Budapest as in other towns. The average size of the housing estates Dwelling Flats Settlement houses Flats per one housing estate Budapest 78 1 950 Other towns 81 1 069 Villages 34 279 Total 74 1 141 The building of housing estates was more intensiv in the seventies than before. 49 percent of the housing estate dwelling houses were built in this period in towns. The proportion of housing estate dwelling houses built in the past decade was over 50 percent in country towns. Among all housing estate dwelling houses built between 1970 and 79: Budapest Country towns County towns County seats Other towns All towns The proportion of one-storied buildings is lower at the housing estates than other places, but their number and proportion is still considerable. This refers to the country towns and Budapest as well. Almost half of the one-storied housing estate dwelling houses were built before 1960, and there are some old buildings among them. The majority of the more-storied housing estate dwelling houses were built in the past decade. 84 percent of the five-and-more-storied housing estate dwelling houses were built in the seventies (about 4 300 buildings). Only 430 such dwelling houses were built in the seventies outside the housing estates. The most frequent height of housing estate buildings is 4 stories. The number of occupants is on the average 8-9 times as many in a housing estate dwelling house as in another dwelling house. This is so because the average number of flats is higher in a housing estate dwelling house than in another house, and the occupancy density per flat is also higher. The progress of housing estate construction is indicated in the distribution of urban housing estate dwelling houses by the year of the building: Built before 1960: 11.6 percent Built between 1960 and 69: 24. 1 " Built between 197 0 and 79: 64. 3 " The proportion of one-room flats is much lower, the proportion of 2-3-roomed flats is much higher at housing estates than other places. The explanation for this is that a considerable proportion of non-housing-estate dwellings were built before the World War II. and at that time the construction of one-room dwellings was general. The higher frequency of constructing 2-3-roomed flats resulted, that the average room number in a housing estate flat is over 2, contrary to non-housing-estate dwellings. The number of other places per one flat is also higher at housing estates which is a sign of higher level in the way of life. 42. 1 percent 50.6 " 54.6 " 48.1 " 50.6 " 48.7 " 154
