The prepatory activities of the census a/ THE SUMMARY OF TOPICS In order to set the targets of the census, the Central Statistical Office performed largescale preparatory activities. In doing this, the experiences obtained on the occasion of the former censuses performed in Hungary as well as the international recommendations made by the CMEA and the UNO have been largely taken into consideration. The requirements of the ministries, the National Planning Office and other agencies have also been collected and considered. The early preparatory works had started in 1966. At first, the problems of the territorial adjustment have been considered. The detailed programme was discussed during the early months of 1967, with the representatives of the National Planning Office, the Ministry of Building and Town Development as well as of the Ministry of Labour. At the same time, intensive exchange of views have taken place with the responsible divisions of the Central Statistical Office. These preparatory discussions were highly needed in order to ensure that the questionaries of the experimental survey and the micro-census to be performed in the early months of 1968 be suited to the requirements of the census programme of 1970. In april 1967, lively discussions have taken place with the representatives of the Planning Office, the ministries and experts of the divisions of the Central Statistical Office as to the uniform concepts, categories and classification to be used. The drawing up of the questionnaries has taken place on the basis of the experiments obtained by means of the pilot-census and micro-census of the year 1968 performed. The preparatory works of the census were enhanced by a number of scientific and professional lectures held in the regional working group of the Demographic Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in the Urbanistic Society as well as in the Statistical Section of the Economic Society. During the discussions, the speakers gave expression to the requirements, the points of view and the needs manifesting themselves on the side of the professionals as to the programme. Several main topics of the preparatory work are listed in the following brief excerpt.
