1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)

I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 3. The programme of the census

3. The programme of the census a/ THE PATTERN OF THE QUESTIONARIES The forms to be filled in and used for interrogation purposes during the census were the "Register of dwellings" (Lakásösszeiróiv) and the "inquiry list of individuals" (Személyi kérdőiv.) No separate inquiry forms for the survey of the building (dwelling house) itself was used, since the respective questions figured on the Register of dwellings. In block of flats or apartment houses it was enough to answer these points in giving the details of the first flat registered. As far as the inquiry list of individuals is concerned, as opposed to the survey system of the census of 1960 based on lists of proportional participation of the households, the survey was performed in 1970 by means of indivudal questionaries for the sake of feasibility. The registration was .executed by means of two inquiry forms, of different size. In the case of the full-scale registration which comprised 75 per cent of the census districts, a form of restricted content was used (printed in green; formulas A and C), while in 25 per cent of the census districts, i.e. in cases of sample surveys, by means of forms furnishing more information (forms printed in brown; formulas B and D. ) Sample techniques within the censuses are used nowadays in a number of countries, on the purpose of collecting more disaggregated data. Techniques of this kind were applied in Hungary in 1970 at the first time. Thus the charge of both the data suppliers and the census-staff could be considerably diminished. The sample based on 25 per cent of representativity may contain a large number of questions being able to meet special requirements too. The sample techniques ensure a considerable saving of costs in both the registration and the data processing; at the same time, a sample of a large size like this is able to ensure data of acceptable accuracy. The quantity of the primary documents (questionaries) needed was equal to more than 14 millions of forms in the following repartition: Registers of dwellings full-scale sample survey Inquiry forms of individuals full-scale sample survey 24 2 400 000 800 000 8 300 000 2 800 000
