Néprajzi tárgytípusok kialakulásáról és restaurálásáról - K. Csilléry Klára: A hegedűhátú szék útja a magyar parasztsághoz és néhány restaurátori tanulság

a piece of furniture for the lower classes. As an innovation for comfort, the back is attached to it in the 14th century as used by the Italian citizens. Its distinguished appearance was adopted in the 15th century, and was displaced by the board-legged version suiting better the Renaissance taste in the 16th century. After this, its use became more common among ordinary people. On the contrary, it got to the citizens and aristocrates of S-Germany as a piece of furniture for prestige, and spread from the germans, to the people of similar social status, towards the adjoining territories of the East. The degradation in rank occurred, on German territory, by the 18th century, and the evidences of its popular use are known from the same time. The situation is similar in Hungary. In the peasant's home, this type of chair is again functioning as a fancy furniture, and conservation of the object should, first of all, reflect this fact. The author stresses the importance of, beside the dignified exteriour, the proper setting of the angle of legs and back, in case the object have been subjected to unprofessional treatment.
