protease (Alkaláz) solution. Protection of these surfaces were made by Plastubol (a 5% solution of methyl-metacrilate, buthyl- -metacrilate co-polymer in monofluor-trichloromethane + difluor- dichloromethane) , so as the polish could be detached from the immediate surrondings of the inscriptions as well. After dusting off the maps by rubber powder, the sticky media containing starch were scraped off, then the sheets were treated in an Aguazim bath (a french agent containing amylase) on 45-60°C. The pH value was set at 6-7. Checking with potassiumiodide, the washed sheets gave a negative reaction. The contamination was detached in a 4-5% fatty alcohol bath. Following a substantial washing and neutralization in a 1:1 diluted bath of oversaturated Ca/OH/2/ the sheets were dried. The metal fittings of the object were in fairly good state of preservation. Their cleaning and passivation was performed using urotropin with phosphorous acid. The missing parts of the wooden cabinet were completed using pine wood of different colour and texture as the original. Epoxy resin was used as adhesive. The missing cranks were lathed of nut-wood. About half of a crank missing was supplemented by polyesther resin, mixed with wood-flour and mineral paints. The missing side-board parts of the cabinet due to intensive wear were supplemented using transparent artificial resin, thus the original pattern of the veneer remained unchanged. Before reassembling, the wooden matter had been treated by 2% diluted pentachlorophenol-sodium, as a prevention against further deterioration. The torn parts of the maps and their completion were fixed by an adhesive containing Glutofix + 5% Planatol BP (a methyl-cellulose content adhesive). For completing, paper similar to the original one was used, specially made for museum inventory books, without wood-pulp, 2 bound with CaCOj, weight cca IOO g/m • For mounting, a linen similar to the original one in thread density was used, bound by Bi Fix BN 95 foil. The maps, with the exception of one intended as reference for the originals wer supplied with a new paper trimming of good folding resistance. The latter was also fixed using Bi Fix foil. After the reassembling and glueing of the cabinet the object was polished using a wax polish (400 ml 150
