The restoration of a 19th century map-holder cabinet.- Summary The cabinet belonging to the Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey contains 13 maps made by C.F. Weiland in the period between 1835-1843. The aim of the restoration was, besides the conservation and completion, to recall the original function of the object as a demonstrative means. Thus the methods securing the proper use of the object were focused on. In the first part, results of scientific studies, the determination of the wooden raw material are presented, later the measures of the restoration are described.

The map-holder cabinet had to be dismounted for the sake of a sufficient restoration. The soaking off the sheets of maps, that had been sticked by glue, was performed using 5-10% diluted Alkaláz enzyme of 40-45°C. The non-painted wooden surfaces were cleaned by using surface-active cleaning agent (Evatriol), while the detachment of the old polish, heavily worn, darkened and striated was performed by dimethvl-foramide.
