PREFACE The majority of articles issued in our volume consists of the papers delivered at the 11th National Conference of Restorers held on 24th and 25th January, 1985. Though the lecturers were dealing thoroughly with the question of work connections between museologists and restorers during the previous conference, having taken the importance of the subject into consideration we gave place even now to two lectures of that nature, which were held by József Korek and Lajos Velledits. Recently the Hungarian restorers have been charged more frequently with works to be done abroad. The reports made by Zsolt Visy museologist-archeologist and Ernő Krach restorer respectively have excited a great interest. The two specialists were able to inform the colleagues on their archievements. Considering that the plenary session, because of the great number of participants (170-180 persons) would not have enabled professional debates of creative character to be resumed, we returned to the older traditions and organized section meetings as well. Most lectures were delivered in the section dealing with paper and book restoration. The metal, textile and art-restorers held rather work discussions connected with certain lectures. Contrary to the custom the wood restorers didn't organize any section meeting as they held a special conference on the 21st and 23rd August. (The material of this meeting and that of the preceding wood restorer conferences will be published in a separate volume of the scientific review "Múzeumi Műtárgyvédelem".) In conformity with the traditions several short reports on study tours made abroad have also been rendered at the National Conference of Restorers. The material of these reports was already published in the bulletin "Múzeumi Hirlevél", therefore they didn't figure in .eur volume. But we considered to be important to publish the relation of experiences of Joachim Szvetnik on his work done in the USA in 1977, despite of the fact that this report was rendered at a previous conference as this is a unique document of investigations of the Hungarian crown made before the return of this latter to Hungary.-8-
