A Mississippi vasárnap, f. hó 21-én érkezett meg ide Kossuthtal és 58 társával. A hajót nyolc napra vesztegzár alá kellett helyezni. Kossuth azonnal találkozást keresett velem, amibe én beleegyeztem. A vele való egyórai beszélgetés során kivettem belőle, hogy a hajót Gibraltárban el akarja hagyni, mert szándékában áll, hogy halaszthatatlan ügyeinek elintézése végett Angliába menjen. Szívesen látta volna, ha a hajó őt Southamptonig vinné és Gibraltárban várta volna meg oda való visszatérését. Minthogy erre nem volt felhatalmazásom és az előrehaladott idény miatt a hajónak sem állt módjában, hogy Kossuthra Gibraltárban várakozzék, rá akartam bírni, hogy térjen el ettől a tervétől és menjen először az Amerikai Egyesült Államokba. Erre elváltunk. Másnap, szeptember 22-én újabb levelet kaptam tőle, amelyben azonban már határozottabb hangon fejtette ki előbbi álláspontját, kötelezvén magát arra, hogy 15—20 nappal Gibraltárba érkezése után ugyanoda visszatér, hogy útját onnét az Egyesült Államokba folytassa. Angliai útjának szükségességét egyébként a következőkkel indokolja: „1. ...to carry my little children to England, besides this, I have highly important business to arrange. 2. All official and semiofficial public papers of Austria have told the world that my liberation was agreed and arranged by Austria on that condition that I should he forced to leave Europe and be transported directly to America.
