162 The Cathedral Chapter of Esztergom in the Fifteenth Century was also adjudicated the vili of Nevegy itself in return for the judicial fines that the monastery had failed to pay. Although the latter subsequently restarted the case on various pretexts, the situation did not change: the chapter of Esztergom remained in possession, and enjoyed both the tithes and the other revenues accruing from the vili ever after. Almost all the documents issued in the course of the lawsuit have been preserved for us in the private archives of the chapter. This, indeed, seems to have been one of the resons why no one has attempted so far to analyse the entire case or at least a section of it. Of course, nor was it the aim of the present book to venture on a full-scale reconstruction of the case, as the private archives of the chapter are still practically unexplored from this perspective, and contain a large number of undated notices and drafts which would have to be examined individually and identified with the help of the dated charters. That said, in order to attain a better understanding and usability of the source analysed here, I at least briefly outlined the course of the litigation up to 1465. In the first part of the first chapter I described the source itself (1.1.1.), the history of how the chapter came into the possession of the tithes which subsequently became disputed (1.1.2.), and calculated the revenues stemming therefrom (1.1.3.). The next two sections offer a reconstruction of the judicial process from the beginning until the starting point of the „chronicle" (1.2.1.), and then from 1452 to 1465, mainly on the basis of the „chronicle" itself. A further section deals with the attorneys who proceeded in the case (1.3.), and another, shorter one, with other information provided by the source, such as the payments effected by the chapter in the course of the litigation. The insertion of this latter section was mainly justified by the fact that the register contains the legal costs precisely of the decade investigated here, and can thus practically be regarded as an account book; the evidence it provides, however, was not used here to quantify costs but to supply additional information about political and ecclesiastical history (1.4.). The next part dwells on the lay and ecclesiastical persons who are listed in the witness-clauses of twenty-nine notarial documents (1.5.1. és 1.5.2.), and, with regard to the places where his charters were dated, on the palaces of archbishop Dénes Szécsi at Buda and Esztergom (1.5.3.). The last part of this section provides the most important information contained in the said notarial documents with witness-clauses, issued between 1451 and 1465, in a charted form. (1.5.4.). The second chapter of the book offers an edition of the „chronicle" of the Sasad litigation, that is, basically a record of the activities and costs of the chapter's notaries between 1452 and 1465. As it contains few precise dates, but the events it refers to could be correctly placed with the help of other documents issued in the course of the litigation, the „chronicle" is edited here with ample notes on its content. The third chapter of the book contains three letters sent by canon Péter Palicsnai, who represented the chapter in the Roman Curia several times during the lawsuit, on 28 February 1458 from Rome (3.1.), 14 January 1460 from
