Diplomatarium comitum terrestrium Crisiensium (1274-1439) Diplomatie analysis The earliest known charter issued by the comes terrestris which is extant dates to 1274. There are twelve charters from the fourteenth century with their full text extant and issued only by the comites terrestres of Križevci, as well as five charter issued by them together with the comes of Križevci.138 Aside from two exceptions,139 all are available in originals. From the fifteenth century there are 40 charters extant, of which 22 are extant in full and original form. In the first part of the diplomatic analysis (external characteristics), we shall consider original charters, while in the second part we shall take into the account all available full texts of the extant charters. For the fourteenth-century charters where the comes terrestris was listed together with the comes of Križevci in the intitulatio, we have considered them as charters of the latter, and thus they are not taken into the account in the analysis. All charters that are extant are originals are, with five exceptions,140 written on parchment. The orientation of the parchment is always arranged so that the rows are arranged parallel to the longer side (carta non transversa). Parchment and paper were usually damaged later. There are regular holes alongside the charters, and their size matches the amount of text written on them. Charters issued by the comites terrestres in the thirteenth and the fourteenth century show little scribal skill. We are familiar with one text of a charter which was corrected afterwards: there, the mistakes in writing were corrected in a kind of footnote, appended under the text, as was usual in the privilege charters.141 Neither the lines nor the margins are sketched beforehand. The text therefore "freely flows" until the end of the line, in contrast to the charters of privilege of the bans and comites of Križevci, which are usually neat.142 In the following century, however, charters were written by more experienced hands. The officials of the county of Križevci may have played a role in this. As a result, wrong words stricken through 138 Besides that, only four mentions and one section reproduced elsewhere of the charter are extant. 139 11 July 1317 (Documenta 2); 23 September 1340 (Documenta 6). 140 Around 1418 (Documenta 48), 5 April 1423 (Documenta 50), 16 May 1426 (Documenta 56), 2 August 1430 (Documenta 58), 4 October 1436 (Documenta 60). 141 From the charter of comes terrestris George, son of John from 1369: tenore presencium quibus ex significamus (Documenta 13). 142 However, we know about an opposite example, where a charter of George, son of John, of 4 April 1369 has the standard exterior appearance of a comes’ charter (Documenta 13). 134
