Comes terrestris Crisiensis. An introductory study Cvet (Florian?) was the first comes terrestris whose charter is extant. It is a charter from 1 September 1274 whose seal, unfortunately, has not survived.63 From four kindreds of the castle warriors of Križevci existing in the fourteenth century, we know that three of them were named after the former comites terrestres (FFegen, Chuet and Prevša). Thus we can assume that the founder of the fourth kindred (Matthew) was also one of the comites terrestres in the thirteenth century, although he is not explicitly mentioned in our sources.64 There is another individual whom we can assume also held that office. In 1269 a certain Comes Pesek (nicknamed Dog?), or Comes Pezk, iobagio castri Crisiensis, came in front of Martin, comes of Križevci. Therefore, it is probable that Pesek, some time before 1269 was also comes terrestris, although we do not have any information on his activity as such.65 We know that he had a son named Matthew66 and it is possible that the person in question is the same Matthew who founded the homonymous kindred of the fourteenth-century castle warriors. Also, it would not be unusual that a father and a son both held the same office. As we will see later, it was possible in the later period, when members of the kindreds of castle warriors of Križevci were in general more numerous than they were in the thirteenth century. The first comes terrestris known by name from the fourteenth century was Guy (Vidus). He held the office in 1317.67 We shall encounter him again, in 1339, when he was mentioned as one of the judges who, together with their colleagues, had to estimate the value of some land during its sale. Then, he held the title of comes.68 It is risky to claim that he is the same Guy who was homo banal is in 1334.69 On account of our lack of sources he cannot be identified nor related to any of the kindred of the castle warriors of Križevci with certainty. This individual has two possible identities. If the person in question is Guy, son of Giles, then he was a member of the Hegen kindred. On the other hand, if the person in question is Guy, son of Wolf, then his noble origin is not precisely known, but 63 1 September 1274 (Documenta 1). 64 The division on the four kindreds is also confirmed by a charter from 1430 with which King Sigismund is elevating the castle warriors of Križevci to the rank of true nobles of the kingdom, by which he is defining them according to this four kindreds: nobilibus quattuor generationum Prelsa, Hegen, Mathews et Ceweth vocatorum ... castrensibus (AHAZU, D-XI-60; MNL OL, DF 231 254). 65 1269 (HDA, DMV, no. 22, MNL OL, DF 218 519).
