Cladocera taxa described by E. DADAY, together with a catalogue of pertinent material in the Hungarian Natural History Museum By L. FORRÓ & D. G. FREY (Received June 16, 1981) Abstract. The catalogue contains a) a numbered chronological list of papers in which DADAY dealt with taxa that he described, together with an inventory of all DADAY' s taxa in each paper; b) a numbered alphabetical list of the taxa DADAY described, keyed to the particular papers of the former list, together with reference from the literature indicating the present status of each taxon; and c) a list of all DADAY' s Cladocera (973 slides and 700 tubes) deposited in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, including 55 taxa described by DADAY, amongst them type-series of 6 species designated by DADAY and 35 lectotypes E. DADAY was a prodigious worker, who fearlessly tackled the systematics of nearly all groups of microscopic aquatic animals - particularly Protozoa, nematodes, rotifers, gastrotrichs, Cladocera, copepods, ostracods, and mites. He described a total of 91 taxa of Cladocera, mostly at the species level, which affords an indication of what the magnitude of his total output was. During the last decades of the 19th century and the first of the 20th, almost no scientists, DADAY included, selected and carefully preserved type specimens of the taxa they described. Fortunately, however, in the present instance mounted specimens and specimens in alcohol of many of the taxa DADAY described are still extant and available for study. This paper represents a catalogue of the cladoceran taxa DADAY described and what specimens from his original material are extant, which can help resolve the often difficult decisions regarding conspecificity . Lectotypes that have already been selected are noted. For taxa that have specimens available but not yet studied, we hope this catalogue will provide an incentive as well as a tool for specialists in various groups to undertake a study of their group. The catalogue is divided into three parts: 1) a numbered chronological list of papers in which DADAY either describes new taxa or refers to those he had described earlier, together with an inventory of all DADAY' s taxa in each paper, 2) a numbered alphabetical list by families, genera, and species of the taxa DADAY described, keyed to the particular papers in which they are described or mentioned, together with a reference from the literature indicating the present status of each taxon, and 3) a list of all DADAY' s Cladocera in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, together with notes on the various taxa, designation of types, etc. The authors wish to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Olga SEBESTYÉN for her criticism an earlier draft of the manuscript. One of us (D.G.F.) is particularly indebted to her for providing a list of DADAY' s papers in the early 1960s that possibly were related to Cladocera in one way or another. Subsequently, most of the papers in this list were examined, and xerox copies were obtained of those papers not already on hand that seemed necessary for evaluating DADAY' s work on Cladocera. Having all these papers available in Bloomington greatly simplified the task at hand. We are indebted to Dr. N. KOROVCHINSKY for permitting the publication of unpublished results on the sldid material of the DADAY collection.
