E fejleményben szerepet játszott a feminizmus terjedése, a hagyományosan vallásos életformák megrendülése, a szülői tekintély és az iskolai fegyelem meglazulása. De ezeken az általános tényezőkön felül, a zsidó családi életben észlelhető változások legaggasztóbb tünete a vegyesházasságok problémája^ t

Ezzel a tüneménnyel a huszas években egy nagysikerű vígjáték Abie’s Irish Rose (Ábris rózsája) a kor szellemének megfelelően foglalkozott. A közönség tudta, hogy a zsidók amerikaiak akarnak lenni és, hogy e cél elérésének egyik módja: feleségül venni egy ír lányt.

Arnofld Schwartz, az American Jewish Committee társadalomkutató osztályának analitikusa és a New York-i Egyetem szociológusa, azt jósolja, hogy a vegyes. házasságok száma növekedni fog. AZ Amerikai Zsidó Évkönyvben nemrég meg jelent tanulmányában kimutatja, hogy jelenleg az Egyesült Államokban élő zsidóknak 10—15 ! százaléka köt házasságot nemzsidó partnerrel.

Ez az arányszám emelkedni i fog, ha nem is hirtelen, de észrevehetően. mert a .zsidók ma mír bekerültek az amerikai élet

főáramlatába. A zsidó rozskenyér népszerű az amerikai ebédlőasztalokon és a középiskolák igazgatósága manapság ragaszkodik hozzá, hogy a növendékeknek megmutassanak minden katedrálist, templomot és zsinagógát a városban, annak bizonyítására, hogy minden ember testvér.

A zsidó férfi és a keresztény nő közötti házasságokban, a lány általában magasabb'gazdasági státust ér el. Másszóval, a zsidónak, önmagán kivül még valami „többletet” kell hoznia a házasságba. A keresztény lány pedig elmondhatja barátnőinek: „Zsidóhoz mentem férjhez, de gazdag”, vagy „zsidó, de iró, vagy „egyetemi tanár”.

A 19. század elején, amikor Napóleon lebontotta az európai zsidó gettókat, voltak rabbik, akik siránkoztak, hogy a zsidókat el fogja nyelni a keresztény társadalom.

De a zsidók nem tűntek el és nem is fognak eltűnni.

NEM FAIR

A témának különleges konferenciát szentelt az Amerikai Zsidó Kongresszus, amelynek keretében rabbi Leó Jung, a New York Jewish Center igazgatója kijelentette: „A vegyes

házasság ... nem fair a zsidó néppel szemben, nem volt az a múltban, nem az a jelenben és a jövőben; nem fair a nem zsidókkal szemben; és nem fair a házasság intézményéhez.”

Rabbi Joseph Klein, a Worcester-i (MassachuSetts) Emanuel Temple főrabbija: „A legtöbb zsidó szülő, még azok is, akik nem tartják be szigorúan a vallás előírásait, katasztrófának tekinti, ha gyermekük nemzsidóval házasodik össze... De minden érvük hiábavaló, ha van a közösségben egy rabbi, aki hajlandó megáldani a vegyes házasságokat.”

Mi zsidókképpen úgy mint mások, nem játszhatunk egyszerre kétféleképpen. Nem élhetünk egy pluralisztikus szabad társadalomban, anélkül, hogy ennek a szabad társadalomnak az elvei valamilyen formában ne kerülnének konfliktusba sok ezer éves vallási hagyományainkkal és szokásainkkal.

A feminista eszmék térhódítása ellenére, a zsidó lányoknak az Egyesült Államokban mind a mai napig kevesebb alkalmuk van „külső” kapcsolatokra, mint a fiuknak, akik, mihelyt kikerülnek a középiskolákból vagy az egyetemekről, exisztenciát teremtenek.. maguknak az életben. Tekintve, hogy az amerikai zsidók túlnyomó többsége rendezett, középosztálybeli életet él, nincs külső kényszer, ami a lányokat önálló karrierre vagy pénzkeresésre sürgetné. A zsidó család emelkedő társadalmi „stá tusának” egyik jele éppenséggel az, hogy lányuk mentes minden anyagi gondtól.
