122 24 an innate spirit of justice, was dreaded by some and worshipped by ot­hers, or even causing terror among the high and mighties of that time, to such an extent as to persuade the general commander of the Austrian garrison from the Satmar fortress to offer annual subsidies in order to approach him and to annihilate his daring deeds. Extending the sphere of knowledge regarding the life and activity of Pintea Viteazul, this dominant personality at the crossing of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries in the Transylvanian life, the present study reflects at the same time the attitude of the principality Government that, alike the commanders of the Imperial army in the North-Eastern part of the Principality, is norried about the harmful and destructive evolu­tion of the great outlaw’s deeds, even on a state line.
