Here are some facts about our participation in the Olympic Games Ancient Olympic Games originated in Greece and were held from 776 B.C. to A.D. 393. The modem Olympic Games began in 1896 when organizers revived them to encourage world peace and friendship and to promote healthy sporting competition for the youth of the world. The Games were scheduled on four-year cycles. Hungary had a good start. The most popular leaders of the Reform Era, Széchényi, Kossuth, Wesselényi, were practicing athletes. They belonged to the Physical Training Institute in the city Pest. Hungarians wanted to take part in the Olympics right when it started.
