HUNGARIAN as it was written 800 years ago| In the 1700-s György Pray, a historian of the time, discovered a prayer, written in Hungarian. It was written somewhere between 1192 and 1195. As it turned out, it is the oldest Hungarian text. Not only Hungarian, but the oldest among all the Finn-ugrian languages. Pray, was researching church documents in Deaki. This village, with five hundred house, is a settlement along the railroad line between Budapest and Vienna close to the Vag river area. The church, named after Holy Mary, dates back at least to the eleventh century, when Pope Pascal II mentions it at a later time in 1103. The original church with a monastery was destroyed and a new one was built in place during the XIII century. This romanesque style building had a second tier where traces of old fresco painting could still be seen. Pray found a codex, what was named after him, from the time of the Árpád dynasty. It belonged to the parish of Deaki. It contained ecclesial rules, laws, also funeral celebrations. Among these was the “Halotti Beszéd” - Funeral Oration. This very important relic, and historical document, today is very carefully guarded at the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. In this article we show a facsimile of the original Oration. Also written out line by line in our alphabet, and numbered for easy comparison. I am sure that readers who know Hungarian will take the trouble figuring it out, I have to call their attention to the unusual letters. For example the letter “s” looks like a “f’, and the “ch” would sound like a “k”. I am sure that this might help. Thanks to Alan Jenkins we have the English translation. It could be found in a book ‘TOO Hungarian Poems” that was published in Manchester, England in 1976. In today's churches we find prayer books 100 or more years old. Joseph F.
