This December, as every year in the past so many years the children were preparing to present the Hungarian community with Christmas poems, music and songs. We had quite a production lined up for the afternoon of Sunday December 14th.Twenty children from ages four to fourteen were studying their parts, and getting their instruments ready. There was a rehearsal on Saturday, and we decorated the hall in the Saint Emery's Church in Fairfield. Everything was going well, the children were all excited little nervous, but everyone knew their parts famously. It was going to be another wonderful celebration, maybe even better that last year... Than came Sunday, and the weather all of a sudden decided to give us all the snow from our poems and songs... A "White Christmas" celebration...-it was pretty to look outside all morning and see the beautiful white snow covering the trees, and roofs. Unfortunately It covered the roads too, and just kept covering them deeper and deeper. We were hoping that it would let up, but by noon it was clear: WE WERE SNOWED OUT. It was very hard to call around and tell everyone that we most likely will not have a show. But the roads were unsafe, and everyone's safety was naturally the most important. Some of us locals, and organizing Pannónia Club members made it there safely, although not without difficulties. At the end there were five children, all from Fairfield who were able to get to the church. Stanley Pongrác, Gabriella and László Magyar and of course my boys Thomas and David. Vali Miklós and her husband, Judith Balogh and our scholarship recipients Krisztina Sorfozo and András Mathe, along with their family were there too. Before dismantling our decoration, we decided to listen to whom we could, and so the Magyar and the Wolff children recited their poems, and we enjoyed some violin and cello music. Then sadly we had to take down the tree. We have never been snowed out before, so we didn't have a plan to postpone the event, especially since this is such a busy time of the year for everybody, and the participants come from all over the state. For the next Sunday however the Calvin United Church of Christ welcomed everyone who wanted to take place in their celebration. The lesson for us: Next year we shall have a "snow-date" planned. But before I'd close my account of that day, let me thank everyone who took the time and made the effort to learn various parts for our program: Peter and Erik Mihok; Dayton, Tarren and Nathyn Horvath; Taylor and Connor Shurmann; Agnes and Mihály Farkas; Stanley Pongrác, Emily Pal, Daniel Arvai, Peter Deer, Andrea Finta, Gabriella and László Magyar, Thomas and David Wolff, Donald and Julien Heller. Thank you all, and save your verses for next year! ...Everyone, have a Wonderful New Year!!!! The performers who came did their share.
