Sándor Petőfi KISKÖRÖS TO SEGESVÁR Probably the best known poet among the Hungarian eople is Sándor Petőfi. Bom in 1823 and died on the attlefield in 1849. His poetry is easy to understand and follow, it is about love and patriotism He was the spiritual leader of the revolutionary youth in the 1840s. After finishing high school he became a soldier, then an actor. Later he took a job as editor with a fashion magazine. In 1847 he married Julia Szendrey. During the Battles to free Hungary Petőfi served as Adjunct to General Bern. He died at Segesvár during the battle. This is the room in Kiskörös where he was born. It is preserved as a museum. The bed is the original one where his mother gave him birth. The Pilvax Coffeehouse was the place in Pest where the intellectual youth gathered, exchanged opinions and and managed their revolutionary organizations Evangelic high school in Pest attended by Petőfi.
