Éhe red-whlÉe-and-green As our busses meandered through the curvy road off the highway towards the State Capitol building in Hartford we all were excited in anticipation of the upcoming event. There was a lot of talk and work that lead up to this moment. First of all a lovely young lady, Sandra Czunas, from the Hungarian Club of Hartford, came to Bridgeport with State Representative Carl Dickman. The meeting took place at Rev. Szilagyi’s church. The other Hungarian churches, the Pannónia and AHHA participated. For the bus trip people from Norwalk and some surrounding towns joined us. It was a special pleasure to find out that Hungarian organizations from Ashford, Hartford, and Wallingford also took part in the celebration. Just as the bus turned facing the Capitol Building somebody in the front seat announced that the Hungarian flag is flying on the building. Sure enough on the left was the American, on the right the state and high up in the middle flew the red-white-and-green. Everybody felt honored by this. It was a nice experience to walk into the building. Beautifully designed and kept, colorful hand steciling enhanced every space. In a court setting the chairs, the speaker stand, the music instrument were all set up. In the adjoining area an exhibit showed embroidery, artifacts, historical memorabilia, also large size photographs donated by Brass City Printery of Waterbury. Naturally communication between the people was carried on in both Hungarian and English. It was interesting to talk to the people who came. There were couples, wife Hungarian and husband American, some the other way. There were two boys adapted from Hungary by Americans who spoke English only, but they were doing fine together. I ran into a young couple and only the husband had some remote ties to a Hungarian ancestor. Hungarian t-shirts, embroidered blouses added to the festivity feeling. Admired was a Hungarian style attire worn by a man, the Bocskai. The program started with an invocation offered by Rev. Szlezak and was followed by the American National Anthem.
