Mulattam, gondolta, Igen: elnézett félre, a megvetett ágyra, amelyen a paplan háromszögbe volt fölhajtva, a fehér sarka, a vörös paplan a fehér ágyon. Sárgaréz ágy, gyengén sárgán csilllogott a vékony gyertyafényen. Olyan ellenséges, olyan hideg és zavart hangulatok. — Igen, mulattunk, — mondta fanyarul, — kimulattuk magunkat. — Kik voltak ott? — kérdezte újra a papné. — A rendőrkapitány. — Feketics? Meg a takarékpénztári igazgató. — Melyik takarék? . . . — Az az be sem mutatkozott. S elnevette magát. Újra csönd lett. — Maga hogy jött be, nagyságos asszony, mért? — mondta egyszerre kíváncsian. — Be kellett jönnöm, — s gyorsan tette hozzá, — milyen volt, hogy viselte magát? mit beszélt? — Ki? — Ö . . . Arday. Miklósnak a pillantása fáradt, tapádós lett. — Sokat beszélt . . . — Sokat? — mondta az aszszony ijedten, — részeg? Miklós meglepetve nézett rá s vállat vont. — Azt hiszem . . . Igen. — Szegény . . — Szabad? — s leült az ágy mellett a székre. Az asszony az asztalnál ült, az ablak előtt. Az ablakra le volt huzva a vászonredő. Sokáig ültek csöndben, tán az asszony sóhajtva, tán az asszony hóhajtva. — Igen. Dicsérte Tisza Istvánt. Meg Tisza Kálmánt. És szidta a modern időket ... Elromlott a világ. Kihalt a becsületesség. A családi tisztesség. A közerkölcs, a magánélet nemessége.
