Evek óta tart világszerte a századelő divatja: művészetben tudományban, kultúrában. A franciák kezdték a belle époque-kal, majd a Habsburg monarchia következett annak főleg osztrák kultúrtörténetével. De a magyar századelő sem maradt el művészi és tudományos teljesítményeivel a többi mögött, s ennek bizonyítása egy idő óta nálunk is folyik. Egymás után jelennek meg a korszakot bemutató művészeti, filozófiai és kultúrtörténeti kiadványok. Bartók és Kodály zenéjének egyre több a csodálója az egész világon. Kiállításokon mutatjuk be itthon és külföldön a magyar századelő képzőművészetét, és magunk is meglepődünk a feltárt gazdagságon, sokszínűségen. Csakhogy a magyar századelő teljesítményeinek feltárását eléggé megnehezíti a magyar kultúrértékeknek az 1919 utáni szétszóródása a nagyvilágban, ami a harmincas évek végén a fasizmus elöli menekülés során megismétlődött. Csak lassan találnak haza azok az emlékek, értékek és dokumentumok, amelyek a századelő magyar kultúrtörténetét egyre gazdagabban illusztrálják.
