The elders of our Synod ask the congreagtions and the pastors to submit thier articles for the 2009 Bethlen Almanac to be sent to the editors no later than October 31, 2008. The editors ask that the deadlines be respected, in order to avoid delays in publishing. Any submissions received after October 31, 2008 will not be included in the Almanac. 6. According to the Auditing Committee we ask the congregations to pay their (General Fund, Mission Fund, Magyar Egyház-Magyar Church) assesments for the year of 2007 and 2008. 7. The editors of Magyar Egyház-Magyar Church ask the pastors and leaders of the congregations to send in their articles and pictures along with their subscription dues. 8. We inform the congregations that the Free Magyar Reformed Church of Chicago has asked for admission into the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. The motion was accepted by the Bishop’s Council which will be confirmed by the General Assembly in 2010. The Chicago congregtaion will be the member of the Central Classis. We ask for God’s blessing on them. 9. We inform the congregations that in the past seven months 4 new mission congregations have started with the initiative of young pastors: Boston, CT - Rev. Attila Tóbiás; Charlotte, NC and Columbus, SC - Rev.András Debreczeni; Atlanta, GA - Rev. Csaba .Szilágyi; Austin, TX - Rev. Aron Kocsis. We greet the new congregations and ask for God’s blessing on them. 10. According the resolution of the Bishop’s Council, the elders of our Synod are to initiate talks with the Hungarian Reformed Church in Argentine to join the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. The elders of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Argentine have accepted and supported the idea and will bring for the motion at their next congregational meeting. 11. The Free Magyar Reformed Church in Windsor,ONT; Canada has elected a new pastor, Rev.Zoltan Lizik, former pastor of the Cegled congregation in Hungary. On behalf of our church, we greet the new pastor and ask for God’s belssing on his service. 12. Our Synod has confirmed in a resolution to continue to support the Bethlen Home in its future plan by our congregations. On behalaf of the elders of our church I ask everyone to accept and acknowledge the resolutions of the Bishop’s Council. With brotherly love in Jesus Christ Sándor Szabó, Bishop REV. DR. IMRE BERTALAN (June 3, 1918-July 10, 2008) The Rev. Dr. Imre Bertalan was bom in Nyírtass, Hungary. He was the youngest of four sons bom to the Rev. Imre and Piroska Bertalan. Rev. Bertalan’s elementary education took place in Hajdúböszörmény, and his secondary and theological education at the Kollégium in Sárospatak. Rev. Bertalan completed postgraduate studies in Halle, Germany, and in Basel, Zurich and Geneva, Switzerland. In late 1946, he arrived in the United States and continued his education at Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1948, Rev. Bertalan married Ms. Margaret Kosa, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Andrew Kosa, pastor of the Magyar Reformed Church, New Brunswick. During the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Rev. and Mrs. Bertalan served the Hungarian Reformed congregations in Manville, NJ and Staten Island, NY. In 1954, they, along with their three children, Imre, Lillian and Margaret Sarah, arrived in Passaic, NJ, where Rev. Bertalan served the Hungarian Reformed Church for nine years. In 1963, Rev. Bertalan succeeded his father-in-law as pastor of the Magyar Reformed Church. In 1980, Rev. Bertalan was elected President of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. He and his wife moved to Washington, DC that year, which is where he continued to live (Rockville, MD) until his death on July 10th. Rev. Bertalan served the HRFA as President until 1992. At the same time, he served, until the present day, as the Senior Pastor of the Washington Hungarian Reformed Church congregation, which worships monthly in the Wesley Theological Seminary Chapel. Rev. Bertalan received honorary doctoral degrees from the Debrecen Reformed Seminary and Hope College, Holland, MI. In addition to serving the HRFA, Rev. Bertalan was active in the American Hungarian Federation, the Hungarian American Coalition, the Hungarian Scout Federation, the International Hungarian Federation, and the Friends of Sárospatak. In Sárospatak, he and Mrs. Bertalan were instrumental in bringing about the dedication and use of the Bertalan Ház for students and guests of the Kollégium. Rev. Bertalan was also asked by former President Jimmy Carter to be a member of the delegation representing America at the Helsinki Accord Conference in Madrid. Rev. Bertalan preached for three decades on the airwaves of Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America. He authored many articles for both the American and Hungarian press. His two, most noted volumes are entitled: “Az Újrakezdés Népe” and “Ott ülék ő közöttük.” The Bible verse which Rev. Bertalan chose as his life’s theme is Psalm 126:6: “He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.” 1918. június 3-án Nyírtasson született (Szabolcs megyében). Három éves korában elveszíti édesapját aki református lelkész volt. A lelkész-árvákat nevelő Kálvineum fogadja gondozásába Hajdúböszörményben. Majd itt érettségizik a Bocskai István Főgimnáziumban. Sárospatakon készül lelkipásztori hivatására. Tanulmányai végeztével a Kollégium 334. széniora. Egy évre szóló ösztöndíjjal Nyugat -Európába megy, ahol egy helyett négy évet tölt Halléban (Németország) majd Baselban, Zürichben és Genfben (Svájc). A háború után hazatérését a magyar állam már nem engedélyezi. Kivándorol Amerikába, s a rövöd tanulmányúiból egy hosszú életút lesz. A Princeton-i Teológián tanul tovább. Amerikába érkezése első napjától teljesít szolgálatot, mint református lelkipásztor. Négy gyülekezetben szolgált: Staten Island, Manville, Passaic, és New Brunswick. 35 évig tartó lelkipásztori szolgálatát követően 1980-tól 1992- ig az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesületnek és a Ligonier-i Bethlen Otthon igazgató tanácsának elnöke. Innen megy nyugdíjba, s előbb szervezője, majd megválasztott lelkipásztora Washingtonban az Isten lelke által életre hívott gyülekezetnek. A Keleti Egyházmegye espereseként hűségesen szolgálta a magyarság ügyét. Az amerikai magyar közéletben végzett szolgálata elismeréseként tiszteletbeli elnöke az alábbi szervezeteknek: Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület; Amerikai Magyar Szövetség; Külföldi Magyar Csekész Szövetség; Magyar Amerikai Koalíció; Magyarok Világszövetsége - Amerikai Tanácsa; Patak Barátai - Magyar Szekciója. A Helsinki Egyezmény Madridban tartót utókonferenciáján Carter elnök személyes felkérésére az amerikai küldöttség tagja. Három évtizeden át prédikált a Szabad Európa Rádió protestáns félórájában, valamint az Amerika Hangja egyházi műsorban. A Debreceni Református Teológiai Akadémia és a Michigan állambeli Hope College díszdoktori ellismerésben részesíti. Sárospatakon a Bertalan-ház diaszpóra-központnak és öregdiákalapítványi székháznak az alapítója. 1948-ban feleségül veszi Kósa Margitot, egy amerikai magyar református lelkész-család gyermekét. Házasságukat Isten három gyermekkel áldja meg - Lillian, Imre, és Margaret Sára. Szerzője számos, az amerikai magyar reformátusságról és a Sárospataki Református Kollégiumról szóló írásnak.
