MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 7. oldal We should continue. After crucifixion came resurrection. The women and the disciples became witnesses of the resurrection because they had faith in Jesus. Strong faith, wavering faith, confused faith, faith nevertheless. Those who had no faith in Jesus at all, who did not love him, could not see him. Simple reason: God did not take away from them their freedom of not-believing. It was their choice not to believe. What happened to them? Were they doomed and damned forever? Here is an intriguing thought. On the first Pentecost the apostles filled by the Spirit of God came out for the first time to preach the gospel of repentance and forgiveness. There were thousands who heard Peter thunder at them calling them murderers of the Best. We do not know how many of those were there who under the cross had not believed in Jesus. But those who on Pentecost were struck by Peter’s words did repent and were baptized to become followers of the crucified and risen Lord. What happened was that the choice to believe was given again. New opportunities are being given again and again to choose for Jesus. The choice is open at all times, to all people, to the whole world, “In the darkness of this world see the Light of the W or Id.” As believing Reformed Christians we must go one step further: seeing the Light of the World we must become beacons reflecting the Light of the World to all people fighting the powers of darkness. A. H.---------------«» » -----------------BISHOP LÁSZLÓ TÖKÉS'S MELODRAMATIC LETTER FROM TRANSYLVANIA In the preceeding weeks many alarming news reached us concerning Romanian threats against László Tőkés, Bishop in Oradea (Nagyvárad). Now he himself issued a letter communicating the dreadful details of these threats. + It would take a long time to relate all the many falsities, ominous and terrorizing statements, even death-threats against my person since my 1989 action at Timosara (Temesvár) — all because of being minority Hungarian in Romania — especially after the provoking atrocities at Marosvásárhely in March of 1990. I want to speak about the most recent chapter of the never-ceasing and murderous threats against myself and my family in the bygone months in an actual and synthetic manner. The ebb of intimidations engulfed me since October 1991 and they are very much paralleled with those fatal ones in 1989 at Timosara, proving the fact that the infamous former Romanian Securitate is still very much alive and is acting under the cover of the “Vatra” and the “Front” in our Nation. 1.) Our private living quarters in the parsonage are constantly exposed to atrocities; the walls, the fence, the gate are covered daily with intimidating signs and writings; they are spit upon, puked upon and destroyed by unknown attackers; night after night, questionable characters rout and dance around our private home. Very much the same as before at Timosara in 1989. 2. ) Even more deplorable is the behavior of the inimical Press. The Oradea publication, called Phoenix, started to print a column last October in three continuations against me — openly calling me a “fascist” in heavy print in their “factfinding” endeavor, quoting word by word the false accusations from their former dossier of the Securitate Secret Police organization. The same publication was “honored” in the past by the writings of Petre Roman, ex-prime minister of the defunct dictatorship. Similar sister publications of the Romanian extremism are: Romanian Mare, Renastese, Banateana, Totusi Iubiera, Europa, etc. 3. ) The official government paper, the AZl, printed in Bucharest, in its September 28, 1991 issue, goes so far as to state it as a “fact” that ex-King Michael I is residing in my Episcopal Home and from there he expects to go on to Bucharest to join hands with the miners, who brought on the defeat of Petre Roman. Radio Romania re-echoed the same false rumor hour after hour in nation-wide broadcasting presenting me as an enemy of the present regime. 4. ) The same falsity has been repeated by the Romanian News Service and Radio Service with the dubious cooperation of the Le Monde. This publication distorted my statement made in Paris and quoted me as saying: “Transylvania does not belong to Romania.” I published the correction immediately and notified the Rompres News Service at once. In spite of all that the official Romanian Press and Radio just kept on repeating the falsehood over and over again, calling me an “irredenta” agent of Hungary. 5. ) It is yet more painful that even the opposition Press proved to be the willing servant of the same. They also continue to print falsities over and over again with similar tendencies. For example: the Express Magazine in its November 1991 issue presented me as the “friend of Ceausescu” in spite of all that happened in 1989 in Timosara, and called me an “opposition hero of the Revolution.” 6. ) Malignant symptom of our present social standard is the anonymous intimidations. I had to enjoy that at my struggles at Décs and Timosara. I am under the never-ending siege of anonymous letters and telephone calls as a part of psychological war against my person. The month of October for me was not one of the “falling leaves” but of falling anonymous letters. The “Jordano Joesko” published news, eminating from Debrecen, that my car-accident in Hungary was not an accident, adding that the “master shooters” will assassinate me. At the same time letters came from Ploiesti threatening with the assassination of my children likewise. Even my 74-year-old mother received letters preparing her for the cross to bear. The ultimate threat came to the kindergarten teacher of my 5 year-old son because of being his instructor. 7. ) An anonymous writer went as far as to notify the “Panorama Television” in Budapest that I will be assassinated by one of my own bodyguards, as it is written for me in the plan-book of my life. (That Television played a leading part in portraying the Timosara incident.) 8. ) The younger brother of a former Securitate agent, in possession of internal information, disclosed that my auto accident was not an accident and the henchmen are still plotting for my extinction. A former Major of Securitate, Theodore Salajan, is engaged in the execution of the plot in Romania, and there are also agents outside the border employed to do the same.
