On the first Sunday in May, as has been the custom for many years, the Church Women United held its annual conference in Perth Amboy, NJ. After the opening devotions by the various groups, Priscilla Jenkins sang a solo. Mrs. Elizabeth Dudich spoke the theme: “ Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” Discussion followed and the incumbent officers are: President Helen Daróczy (Perth Amboy), Vice President Emma Snyder (Trenton, NJ), English Secretary Elsie Löki (Perth Amboy), Hungarian Secretary Barbara Hunyady (Linden), Treasurer Helen Bordásh (Roebling), Delegates at large: Ann Balka (Carteret, NJ), Esther Kosa (State Island). Chaplain Helen Nagy (Roebling). Mrs. Elizabeth Szabó and members of the Perth Amboy Women Guild prepared the dinner. Next year’s conference will be in Trenton, NJ. * * * BRIEF NEWS FROM THE CALVIN SYNOD Some of the highlights of the 44th Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod, held on April 19-21 at Ligonier, Pa. “Elected were: The Rev. Paul Kántor to the position of editor of the C. S. Herald—Reformátusok Lapja;”... In ministerial matters: Synod approved the ordination of Sándor Kovács, granted ministerial standing to the Revs. Donald C. Capp (Hammond, Ind., the successor of Rev. Árpád Beretz); Sándor Mészáros (Bethlehem, Pa.); Béla Pohóczky (Dayton, Ohio); Imre Bertalan (Washington, D.C.); accepted Mr. Steven Dallos (Detroit, Mich.) as a candidate for lay minister; also accepted the Rev. Joseph Posta (Kalamazoo, Mich.) for conditional placement. “The Synod raised the minimum cash salary of Pastors to $14,000.— not counting pension, cash allowance, blue cross, etc.” “Vacancies: Homestead, Pa., Morgantown, W. Va.” AKRON, OHIO During the Easter and Pentecost holidays 411 person participated in the holy communion services in our church, our Lorántffy Care Center and in their homes. We beautified our Fellowship Hall with new paneling and repainted our church kitchen. The cost of these works was over $5,500.— We received sizeable donations from our church members. Dr. Arpad Banda, Terecia Banda and Mrs. Anna Sala donated new dishes and kitchen utensils to our church. The worth of this donation is $1,600.— Dr. Arpad Banda donated new Hungarian, American and Christian flags to our church. We are very thankful for these donations. On June 6th, Sunday the Reverend Imre Bertalan was our guest minister. A very big congregation listened his message to us on the Hungarian and English services. The same day we dedicated the statue of the “Hungarian Freedomfighter,” which is the art work of Csaba Kur the well known sculptor. After the dedication of the statue we blessed the plaques of Bishop Ravasz, Bishop Ordass and Cardinal Mindszenty the leaders of the Hungarian Nation against the oppression during the 1940s and 1950s. The plaque of Rev. Géza Kur was blessed also. We baptized in our church Andrea Irén Nagy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. László Nagy. Godparents are Mr. and Mrs. József Simonek. Michael John Phillips and Amy Pesti were married in our church. Witnesses were Lowell and Susan Andolsen. Valentine Jean Kovács and Mary Janet Kibler were married in our church also. Witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne (Cynthia) Tice. Imre Lazar our founding member passed away after a long illness. A big Hungarian speaking congregation was present at his funeral. Mrs. Blodge (Anne) Bukovey, our faithful church member went back to God after a very short illness. Our church was filled with family members, relatives, friends and church members during the English language funeral service. May God comfort the loved ones with the hope of the resurrection. ALLEN PARK, MICH. The following young people were confirmed on Ascenson Day: Roger DeShetler, Michael Horosz, Joseph Ladányi and Nora Szabó. May God help them to keep their pledge and oath. The Dorcas Guild 5 day-bus-excursion to Atlantic City, NJ. was successful and everyone enjoyed the sightseeings at Bedford Village, Pa., the Amish Country side at Lancester, Pa., the cradle of Independence in Philadelphia, etc. Mrs. Helen Hermann president and Mrs. Irene Széles treasurer were in charge of the arrangements with the wife of the pastor. Our Hungarian Folk Dancers had several opportunities to demonstrate their skill and talents: at the Paprikás Sunday Afternoon, The Hungarian Festival, the various summer outings by the organizations in and around the Downriver Area. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Szabó deserve our gratitude and appreciation for working with the folk dance groups. Our Easter holiday assistant was the Rev. Zoltán Bóna, a post-graduate student at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, 111. he was wholeheartedly received by our members.
