MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 9 One Great Hour of Sharing March 5th, 19G7 Church World Service extended actual help to people around the world who became victims of tropical storms, civil wars, earthquakes and other emergencies. Once a year during Lent our church members can participate in giving either money or clothing for the work of overseas relief agencies. A nickle contribution will supply vitamins for 15 days to an African child who is about to go blind from malnutrition. A quarter will provide a week’s supply of noodles for a family in overcrowded Hong Kong. A dollar will provide 160 refugee children a cup of milk a day. Sunday, March 5th, 1967 is the day our churches ask you to help the hungry. Give generously! NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS BETHLEHEM It was the first time that there was no worship service in our church at Christmas. It happened because of the heavy snow fall. The Lord’s Supper was served on New Year’s Day. The important event of the year 1966 was the 15th Anniversary of our church. The mortgage-paper was burned. In less than 4 and a half years we paid off the $23,000 mortgage secured from the Hungarian Reformed Federation. Our annual congregational meeting in January has a very important decision to make concerning the uniting of the two Hungarian Reformed Churches in Bethlehem. Last year we lost 8 members by death. We had no baptisms, and no weddings. One family joined our church. CARTERET A big snowstorm on Christmas Eve had its adverse effect on Christmas Day’s church attendance: the number of communicants was under 200 with 17 sick communions. There were many, however, who brought up their Christmas donations later. The Sunday School gave a beautiful Christmas program in the course of which the “Christmas Story,” printed in Magyar Egyház was presented. White gifts were brought by all children for the migrant program of the New Jersey Council of Churches. After the service, the children received their Christmas gifts in Bethlen Hall including members of the confirmation class who were given individual bibles and the teachers who were presented with copies of Mans' “Christ and the Fine Arts.” Funds for the gifts were given by the Lorantfy Society, the Junior Women’s Guild and the Men’s Felllowship. Statistics from the year 1966: 10 infant baptisms, 8 confirmations, 8 weddings (among them 3 mixed marriages), 7 funerals (among them 4 church members), 3 new members came from other denominations, 7 from other cities, 4 moved away. Total receipts, without previous year’s carryover and without receipts of the various organizations, $21,319.57, total expenses $17,597.37, carryover balance for 1967, including the balance from the previous year, $10,665.13. In addition to this the organizations of the church have a carryover balance of over $13,000. Baptism. Tommy Joseph, son of Robert Corrente and Carol Ann Kutcher, godparents: Ralph Denton and Mrs. Veronica Rasimovicz. Funerals are listed in the Hungarian section. Our congregation participated in the series of Ecumenical Prayer Services held in Carteret during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. One of the services, on January 23, was conducted in our church. DETROIT The Dorcas Guild held their Christmas Party on December 13th. A donation of $1500 was made and a huge mixer for the kitchen purchased for $800.00. On January 19th and 23rd over 400 employees of the Great Lakes Steel Co. were served dinner; on the 30th a retirement dinner will be prepared for 150 men. The Golden Circle Club held their Christmas party at Major’s on the 17th of December. They donated $200 to the church. The New Year’s Eve Party was saddened by the untimely death of a very faithful member, Julius Vogel. A moment of silent prayer was offered in his memory. The annual Valentine’s Day Card Party will be held on Tuesday, February 14th. The Sunday School Christmas Program was very beautiful and was made especially so by the new scenery painted by Mr. Kapler assisted by Charles King of the CYF. One side depicted the city of Bethlehem and the other a toy shop. Special thanks were expressed to him and to the other Sunday School teachers for their faithfulness during the past year. Mr. John Pitel was especially helpful by helping assemble the scenery. We are very happy that now our Men’s Club has become a reality. We shall be looking for great things from this group of dedicated men. The coffee break between the two church services has proven to be one of the best ideas. Here the English speaking congregation meets with the older Hungarians and it is a time of fellowship enjoyed by all. Each Sunday pastries and coffee is donated by three volunteers to make it even more pleasant DUQUESNE 217 members came to Communion at Christmas, 11 shut-ins received the holy elements in their homes. Funeral: Mrs. John Biachko, on December 23rd. Statistics for the year 1966: baptisms 3, weddings 3, confirmed 10, funerals 6, new members 3. We held 122 worship services, attendance 7.600. Communion was observed 7 times, 1,220 members participating. On December 7th, at their Christmas Party, members of the Women’s Club wrapped Christmas gifts for Bethlen Home residents. They sold home-made nut and poppy seed rolls with great success. Future projects include making noodles, stuffed cabbage, cakes and rolls. McKeesport 354 members came to communion at Christmas, 27 shut-ins received the holy elements in their home.
