MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 9 CHURCH OF SCOTLAND CONDEMNS CATHOLIC ATTITUDE TOWARDS MIXED MARRIAGES (Edinburgh) — The attitude of the Roman Catholic Church to “mixed marriages” between Roman Catholics and Protestants, has been condemned by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland meeting here. A report stating the ne temere decree has no legal standing was approved and a copy of it will be sent to the Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity at the Vatican. The report stated that the ne temere regulations were first promulgated in Britain in 1908 and that under them no marriage of a Roman Catholic is considered valid unless celebrated before a Roman Catholic priest. “Wholly obnoxious and an affront to reformed Scotland,” was how the decree was described by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Maxwell, secretary of the Assembly's Church and Nation Committee which presented the report. He made the suggestion in an article published in America, the unofficial, but influential Roman Catholic periodical. He mentioned particularly as needing to be changed the promise that children of mixed marriages be raised in the Catholic faith. His article represents the first time that a member of the USA NATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE FOREST PARK (PENNSYLVANIA) AUGUST 30 — SEPTEMBER 2, 1963 The 24th annual Conference of the Bethlen Youth Federation will again be camp-type. It will be held at a mountain lodge in beautiful Western Pennsylvania, called Forest Park. The site, located ten miles east of Somerset, Pa., was chosen by the host group, the Duquesne Youth Fellowship. The Conference is planned for three whole days beginning on Friday evening and closing on Labor Day afternoon. To get the full benefit of this short time spent together, all should be in camp by Friday night. The fee is $20.00 or $18.50 if the evening meal on Friday is not included. The main topic of the Conference, “A Comparative Study of the Major Branches of Protestantism,” will be introduced by the Rev. Stephen Kovács of Akron, Ohio, and discussed in small groups. The study includes some history and form of government of the Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and Baptist branches as well as the Reformed and Presbyterian traditian. Of the doctrines, because of the limited time, we will be able to discuss only the sacraments. If participating groups accept some of the suggestions of the planning committee, historical skits and dramatic presentations of famous leaders or events of some Protestant groups will round out the main topic. As it was pointed out in the Newsletters, this Conference will emphasize youth participation in leadership: group discussions, mornim and evening prayers, planned activities will be lead by young people. The advisors, the Rev. Stephen Szőke and Rev. Joseph W. Cookson, will act as such and their assistants likewise. There will be ample time for recreation and activities. Attuned to the spirit of our youth, the week end is designed not for relaxation but for mental and phvsical activities in a spiritual fellowship, “three days on the mountain top” in the true meaning of a Christian community.
