10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS DR. KOMJÁTHY AT PASSAIC Dr. Aladár Komjáthy, pastor of our Roebling congregation, has accepted the call of the Passaic Hungarian Reformed Church to become their pastor. He assumed his new responsibilities on July 7. Although serving a congregation of another denomination, Dr. Komjáthy has retained his membership on the roll of ministers of the Eastern Classis of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. CARTERET Worship services during the Summer months — until the middle of September — will begin at 9 A.M. in Hungarian and at 10:15 in English. New Bread Communion was celebrated on July 28th. Orphanage Sunday was held July 21st when the Rev. Alexander Daroczy, Superintendent of Bethlen Home preached at both services. At different occasions two ministers from the old country occupied the pulpit at the Hungarian services: Bishop István Szamosközi from Budapest and the Rev. Vince Kovács from Papkeszi. The congregation gratefully remembered the 60th anniversary of its foundation. At the Service of Thanksgiving on May 26th the Rt. Rev. Dr. Zoltán Béky, Bishop, delivered the message in Hungarian while the Rev. Raymond E. Maxwell, associate executive secretary of the U. S. Office of the World Council of Churches preached in English a banquet of 300 followed. The Rev. Stephen Feke from the National Council of Churches and Dr. Louis N. Nagy were the principal speakers of the evening. We were happy to greet several of our octogenarian members and especially Mrs. Bertalan Oháh, our only living charter member. On occasion of the anniversary the Lorantfy Society donated $500. the Junior Women’s Guild and the Men’s Club $100 each to the Church. An anniversary booklet compiled by the Pastor for this occasion contains a year by year account of the memorable events of the past 60 years together with a full list of all the church officers since 1903. Copies of this booklet — which is written in both, English and Hungarian — can be obtained free from the Church Office on request. A 10 day long Vacation Bible School was conducted between June 24 — July 3 with four classes. Mrs. Stephen F. Kovács, Miss Nancy Nemish, Miss Ethel Papp and Miss Linda Jensen were teachers, Mrs. Andrew Harsanyi was song and recreation leader. There was an over 90% perfect attendance for all. Baptisms: Glen Alan, son of Gerald A. Shurts and Elizabeth C. Sebok (godparents: Blair Compton and Mrs. Margaret Patrick),George Thomas, son of Robert Corrente and Carol Ann Kutcher (godparents: George Kovács and Jacqueline Kovács), Lisa Ann, daughter of William J. Lukach and Catherine A. Tucker (godparents: James and Lois Peirano). DUQUESNE Our Pentecost Sunday services Were poorly attended, only 183 communicants partook of the sacrament. Our Vacation Bible School was an all-around success: it was well organized, conducted and attended. This was the first year that we had a director other than the minister. Margaret Kovach again proved herself an able leader. She had the cooperation of the following teachers: Helen Sapos, Ann Shigo. Trene Vockley. Helen Homoki and Stephanie Szőke. Assistants included Lester Helmeczi. Charlene Nagy, Janice Horvath. Susan Galata and Shirley Stiver. In six classes we had 44 children, practically all with perfect attendance. A post-confirmation class was conducted by the pastor. Our Women’s Club held their June meeting in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Shigo. Among other business an election of officers was held with the following result: Margaret Kovach, President; Ann Shigo, Vice-President; Julia Nagy, Secretary; Gazella Mansfield, Treasurer and Elizabeth Rozgonyi, Program Chairman. The list of chairladies will be completed by the September meeting, when the officers will be installed. PERTH AMBOY This year’s Summer Vacation Bible School, thanks to the many volunteer teachers and helpers, was a successful one. 134 children registered, and the best attendance was 125 one day. The Women’s Guild had the customary family night outing in nearby Roosevelt Park; it becomes better attended every year. The Men’s Club’s similiar affair before the summer season was also a successful one. Our Youth Fellowship was host to the youth organizations in this area on Saturday July 13th at their annual picnic. The Labor Day Youth Conference registration should have been sent in long before this news will be published, but, if you did not register yet, and there will be vacancies, please, get in touch with the Church office at once! Together with the sister churches we are planning to hire a bus for this Youth Conference. If you want more information, contact your church office. Baptisms: Cathy Jane, daughter of Steve J.
